Earth Day Event: Fuller Park: Napa, California

Join Napa Bookmine for Earth Day to celebrate Fuller Park, a photobook and collaborative labor of love by members of the Napa Valley Photographic Society. Meet the photographers who made this book possible: Carolyn Younger, Chris Sauer, Mitchel Glotzer, and Zach Berkowitz!

Come celebrate Earth Day the Napa way by joining us for a photo gallery viewing and reception, with information and support from the Napa Parks and Recreation Foundation, the Environmental Education Coalition of Napa County, and Napa Wildlife Rescue. This community event is free and open to the public.

Fuller Park is a favorite spot for locals in Napa. We love to walk, jog, take our dogs for a stroll, have picnics, barbecue, hang out, enjoy the roses, take kids to the playground, and even take some photos. Four photographers, all members of the Napa Valley Photographic Society, decided to take photos in the park over the course of a year to capture all the action and beauty. With hundreds of photos, we decided to put together a photo book. Each of us had a different focus for our photography. Together, we captured both two-legged and four-legged park-goers, beautiful roses and other flowers, and, of course, the iconic trees of Fuller Park. We also captured the changing seasons in foliage and flowers. Carolyn, Chris, Mitchell, and Zach enjoyed working together on this project, our love letter to Fuller Park.

Carolyn Younger, a former teacher, reporter, and photographer, moved to the Napa Valley from the Bay Area three decades ago and can't envision living anywhere else. Fuller Park is very nearly in her front yard, and the Napa River is almost as close. Both provide opportunities to photograph the birds and people that never fail to catch her attention.

Chris Sauer has been fortunate to spend most of his career working in the restoration of the natural environment. He was hired by the State of California to create and manage a native plant nursery in Napa, where he worked in collaboration with the California Conservation Corps (CCC), a state agency dedicated to training and engaging California youth. Alongside his environmental work, Chris developed a strong passion for photography. His love of the natural world continues to inspire and shape the focus of much of his photographic work.

Mitchell Glotzer moved to Napa Valley in 1994 from Boston, MA, where he practiced law for almost a decade. Upon arriving in Napa, Mitchell and his wife, Dori, did the unconventional and opened Kirk and Glotzer's New York Bagels. Having taken a darkroom class in Boston, Glotzer never lost his love for photography. In 2008, Glotzer began photographing the renovation of Napa's jewel, the Uptown Theatre, after which he became the theatre's house photographer. He has photographed hundreds of performances throughout Napa Valley, as well as other music festivals, events, weddings, and landscapes.

Zach Berkowitz worked in vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino for 50 years. Zach loves street and documentary photography, and most of his photos include people in action. He has long studied the works of his favorite photographers, including Henri Cartier Bresson, Robert Frank, and Bruce Gilden. Zach also loves putting together photo books to tell a story, and photographing Fuller Park was a labor of love. He continues to visit the park regularly, especially to smell the roses, walk among the trees, see old pals, and thank the park staff for maintaining such an important place in the community.
