E-Spinner 101: electronic spinning wheel basics

Curious about how yarn is made—or looking to try out a new kind of spinning wheel? Join us and Learn to Spin with an Electronic Spinning Wheel in a playful, hands-on workshop that welcomes both total beginners and seasoned spinners.

Electronic spinners (or e-spinners) make spinning more accessible than ever: no treadling required, they’re lightweight, portable, and super easy to use. Whether you’ve never touched fiber before or you’ve spun miles of yarn, this class is your chance to experiment, practice, and discover what these little powerhouse tools can do.

You’ll get plenty of hands-on time with an EEW 6.1 e-spinner during class. By the end, you’ll have yarn you spun yourself to take home—and the confidence to keep exploring on your own. Plus, completing this workshop also counts as your tool test for using the electronic spinning wheels at Artisans Asylum.

The materials fee for this class is $10. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts payments in cash or through Venmo.

By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to:

• Set up, adjust, and operate an EEW 6.1 electronic spinning wheel.
• Understand how e-spinners differ from treadle wheels and why they’re a great option for accessibility and portability.
• Draft and spin fiber into singles, then wind your own yarn to take home.
• Troubleshoot common beginner issues like overtwist or breakage.
• Feel confident experimenting with your own fiber or yarn projects.

Students must be 14 years old or older. Any student under 18 years of age must be accompanied by and under the direct supervision of a responsible adult.
