Dystopia Nonfiction Book Club: The Light that Failed

Join us each month as we meet in person to discuss how our world is being shaped negatively by powerful forces in society, and dystopian imaginings are becoming present-day realities.

December's book is The Light that Failed: A Reckoning by political scientists Ivan Krastev and Stephen Holmes.

This work of political psychology analyzes the last 30 years, from the end of the Cold War and the optimism which followed, to the present-day crisis of liberal democracy. Seeking to explain the rise of populist xenophobia and the rejection of Western political models in the former Communist countries of Eastern Europe, “Krastev and Holmes argue that the Trump revolution represents an ironic fulfillment of the promise that the nations exiting from communist rule would come to resemble the United States.”
