Come and have a go at wildlife surveying two private wildlife sites, will also check on the cowslips planted as filmed on Countryfile!

Transport & Address:

Due to parking restrictions we are all travelling in a Chiltern Rangers Vehicle from our Kingsmead Depot, Fennels Road, High Wycombe, HP11 1SL. There is a pay and display car park next door.

Please arrive in time to leave at 9:30.

The Task:

This is a taster day for people who want to learn about Wildlife Identification and have fun investigating nature. The day is very much giving it a go and taking the worry out of getting it wrong!

We will visit two sites and do a combined Merlin App Bird and Butterfly Walk followed by investigating a few survey squares of the nature reserve and use the SEEK app, books and ID guides to see how many flowers and insects we can identify!

Please download the Merlin and Seek apps on to your phone before you come.

Timings (please note these timings are approximate):

10.00: Arrival on site. Task and safety briefing. Then start surveying

Merlin Bird Walk & Butterfly Transect Walk

11.15: Tea & coffee break

11:30 Survey squares investigation

12:45: Go to the next nature reserve and have lunch

13:30: Merlin Bird Walk & Butterfly Transect Walk then survey squares

15.30: Survey finishes, time to go home!

Note: If you only have the morning to spare, you are most welcome just to come for the morning.

What to Bring:

Your phone with Merlin and Seek Apps downloaded. Don't worry if it doesn't work or you don't like using phones - we can use the ID guides with you instead!

Please dress for the weather and the task.

Long trousers are advisable as there is thorny vegetation and maybe ticks. We also recommend wearing steel toe capped or sturdy boots rather than trainers. If it's been raining wear your wellies!

Wear layers that you can remove if you get hot whilst working. Bring a waterproof as most of our sites have no shelter from the rain.

Please bring plenty of fluids and a packed lunch. We will bring a tea kit and biscuits.
