Overview
Drawing isn’t magic — and it isn’t reserved for the “talented.” It’s a skill you can learn. In this welcoming, beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll discover how artists actually see— and why learning to draw is more about perception than perfection. Through a series of time-tested exercises (including techniques inspired by Betty Edwards’ Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain), you’ll gently shift into “drawing mode,” quiet your inner critic, and build confidence one line at a time.
You’ll explore:
Simple contour drawing
Seeing and using negative space
Upside-down drawing (yes, really!)
Light, shadow, and creating form
Mark-making and observation
How to build a sustainable sketchbook practice
This is a space to experiment, slow down, and reconnect with the joy of looking closely. No pressure. No grades. Just practice and progress. Perfect for total beginners and anyone who wants to return to drawing with fresh eyes.
About the Teaching Artist
Lori Sanford-Ross is a painter and educator based in Beacon, NY. She holds an MFA from the New York Studio School and has received awards from Queens Council on the Arts and NYC Artist Corps. Lori has exhibited widely and currently teaches at Garrison Art Center and Fishkill Farms.
Her teaching philosophy is simple: anyone can learn to draw. She helps students build strong observational skills while creating a calm, supportive environment where confidence can grow.
