Down Memory Lane Writing Workshop - Clothes and Fashion

We will write about the clothes that are important to us, and fashion through the eras of our lives. (IN ORCHARD SQ AND ONLINE)
About this Event

Please note: This workshop will be run in the Writers Workshop in Orchard Square, Sheffield, and also online on Zoom for those who cannot attend in person. It is suitable for beginners who are interested in writing about their memories, as well as people who are working on memoirs, poetry or any other form of writing.

Thinking about what we have worn through our lives can spark memories: that little black dress, those 70s flares, or those 90s, Spice Girls-inspired platform trainers, or even the process of shopping for clothes - from department stores, independent boutiques to jumble sales and charity shops.

Clothes also mark the rites of passage in our lives, from babygrows to school uniforms, party clothes and wedding dresses. Clothing can also have religious or cultural significance, and if you have ever been part of a subculture, clothes are an important badge of belonging. You might be swayed by each season's catwalk looks, or you might be more inspired by the past for your style - or claim not to care about fashion at all.

Clothes say a lot about us.

Bring along a photograph of yourself in an interesting or noteworthy outfit (that's a teenage me in the middle of the cover photo wearing those Bermuda shorts!) If you like, please wear or bring along a favourite piece of clothing!

Using a series of prompts and exercises intended to spark your creativity, you'll come away with pieces of writing about our fashion/clothing related memories. You can then develop these piece of writing further as part of a memoir, poem or novel if you like.

The session will be fun, interactive, and sensitive to everyone's needs.
