Painterly Monotype: Pastel Gelli Plate Printing

In this workshop you will be introduced to painterly printmaking through a combination of pastel drawing and gelli plate techniques. Using dry pastels and acrylic, you will explore how drawing can be translated into expressive, one-of-a-kind monotypes.

The workshop will begin with a series of drawings - quick, guided gestural sketches along with more considered pastel drawings, which will then transfer onto a gelli plate. Through layering and grounding with acrylic, your drawings will be transformed into rich, painterly prints.

The session emphasises experimentation, material exploration, and the dynamic interplay between control and chance. Through the session you will gain an understanding of monotype printmaking processes, explore drawing as a foundation for printmaking, produce a series of unique, painterly prints, and build confidence in experimental, process-led approaches. The workshop concludes with a short reflection and group sharing.

About the tutor

Aprille has over 10 years of experience in teaching and delivering visual art workshops for all ages. Her classes are aimed at beginners and through her supportive approach, makes art accessible and inclusive for all. She specialises in relief printmaking, monoprint and monotype. Often working with mark-making, cardboard and other materials to create hybrid prints. Aprille’s playful approach to printmaking is encouraged in her workshops where she champions individual creative adventures. @studioaprille 

What will I need to bring?

All materials and equipment will be provided.

You may want to bring any interesting objects or textures from home to press into the gelli plate (objects will get inky!).

Please wear old clothes as printing can get messy. No sandals, heels or open toed shoes. Aprons will be provided.

You may want to bring a packed lunch and your own water bottle. Teas, coffees and biscuits are provided.

About Carousel Print Studio

Carousel Print Studio is a not for profit charity based on the ground floor of Exchange Place Studios in Castlegate. Carousel runs educational workshops in printmaking and opportunities for creatives in Sheffield, in a bright, warm, accessible and well equipped printmaking studio.
