About this Event
Two new sci-fi thrillers, 2 local authors, one can't-miss evening! Mary G. Thompson (ONE LEVEL DOWN. THE WORD) and Carolyn Ives Gilman (HALFWAY HUMAN) come together for one evenings to celebrate their new releases. Signings will take place after the discussion.
In Mary G. Thompson's a wealthy family trying to cheat death is overmatched—by a stubborn teenager hiding in a body that looks just like their son. In this taut tale of genetics and entitlement, nature vs. nurture goes horrifically wrong.
In TESTAMENT OF LEAVES by Carolyn Ives Gilman a linguist lies dead on a faraway planet. Inscrutinator Shameesh Kulkarni must find out why. But no one wants to talk: not the prospectors searching for mineral wealth, not the archaeologists trying to piece together a ruined city, not the local schoolteacher, and certainly not the indigenous people whose language the dead woman was researching. Shameesh’s job is to reveal the truth—on a planet where the truth cannot be spoken.
Mary G. Thompson is the acclaimed author of One Level Down, as well as The Word, Flicker and Mist, and other novels for children and young adults. Her contemporary thriller Amy Chelsea Stacie Dee was the winner of the 2017 Westchester Fiction Award. Her short fiction has appeared in Dark Matter Magazine, Apex Magazine, and others. Thompson practiced law for seven years, including five years in the US Navy JAGC, and now works as a law librarian. She holds an MFA in Writing for Children from The New School and completed the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television's Professional Program in Screenwriting. Thompson lives in Washington, DC.
Carolyn Ives Gilman is a Nebula and Hugo Award-nominated writer of science fiction and fantasy. Her science fiction ranges from the far-future Twenty Planets universe to the present-day American Midwest, and places in between. Her fantasy focuses on culture clash and revolution in a magic-haunted island nation. Her short fiction has appeared in many Best of the Year collections and has been translated into seven languages.
