Donor Appreciation Event: Marsha D. McCary Fund for Psychoanalysis

Join us for a special online event to show our gratitude to all the generous donors who have supported the Marsha D. McCary Fund for Psychoanalysis. This event is our way of saying thank you and highlighting the incredible impact your contributions have made. We'll share stories of success, discuss future plans, and celebrate the power of psychoanalytic thinking. Don't miss this opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for mental health and well-being.

In addition, there will be a presentation by the 2024 recipient of our award, Nicki Dawson, PhD, followed by a discussion with Nancy McWiliams, PhD.

“Bringing psychoanalytically informed treatment to families in South Africa”

Dr. Dawson will discuss her efforts at the Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust to bring psychoanalytically informed mental health services to the village of Alexandra, South Africa, to reduce stigma, increase help-seeking behavior, and empower individuals to actively pursue mental wellness.

All past donors to the Fund are invited to attend for free. Registrants will be sent a Zoom link prior to the program.

Nicki Dawson, Ph.D., is a Counseling Psychologist from Johannesburg, South Africa. She is the Research Development and Training Lead at the Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust. Nicki holds an honorary lectureship position at the University of Stellenbosch, as part of the Masters in Infant Mental Health Program and runs runs a small part-time private practice in Johannesburg.

Nancy McWilliams, Ph.D., ABPP., is emerita visiting professor at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University. She has written extensively on personality and psychotherapy.

Dr. McWilliams is a psychoanalytic/dynamic author, teacher, supervisor, and therapist. She has a private practice in psychotherapy and supervision in Lambertville, New Jersey. She is a former president of the Division of Psychoanalysis (39) of the American Psychological Association (APA).

Objective: Following completion of this presentation, participants should be able to summarize three reasons students hold negative perceptions of psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy and explain three ways to make psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theory accessible and engaging to undergraduate students.

American Psychological Association Approval Statement: Division 39 is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Division 39 maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Continuing Education: This program, when attended in its entirety, is available for 1 continuing education credit. With full attendance (sign-in at start of program) and completion of a program Evaluation and Learning Assessment, a certificate will be issued. Psychologists will have their participation registered through Division 39. Partial credit is not available for partial attendance.

APS and Division 39 are committed to conducting all activities in conformity with the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles for Psychologists. APS and Division 39 are also committed to accessibility and non-discrimination in continuing education activities. Participants are asked to be aware of the need for privacy and confidentiality throughout the program. If program content becomes stressful, participants are encouraged to process these feelings during discussion periods.
