Achieving population-based palliative care: Learnings from Telangana, India
Join us at London Global Cancer Week 2024 as Drs. Gayatri Palat and Gillian Fyles, Mr. Swarup Immaraju, and Ms. Vineela Rapelli discuss the road to achieving population-based palliative care in Telangana.
Access to effective and affordable palliative and end-of-life care for those with life-limiting diseases, including cancer, in lesser–resourced countries is limited, resulting in a high burden of distress due to pain, symptoms, stigma, isolation, and financial compromise.
This presentation will address how Telangana, a state in southern India, moved from an absence of palliative care in the early 2000’s to a current, internationally recognized palliative care program serving 38 million people in 33 administrative districts. The steps involved in creating this capacity and the key factors underlying successful implementation, will be presented, along with a roadmap for implementation that can be replicated elsewhere. We will describe how a collaboration between a state government and Indian and Canadian NGOs resulted in palliative care now being accessible to all, including in the poorest and the remotest areas of the state.
This webinar is hosted by Two Worlds Cancer Collaboration and the Hyderabad Centre for Palliative Care.
