Doggy Day Out - Take the Shelter Dogs out on Hikes!

The rules listed below are required for participation as they ensure that field trips are safe for everyone involved. Please note that failure to follow the rules may result in removal from the program. Once you have read the rules, schedule for your Doggy Day Out below! If it is over 80 degrees, outings involving outdoor activities may be rescheduled for safety.

As a participant, you agree to: (click to expand)
- Have the dog under YOUR supervision at all times.
- Not take the dog to off-leash dog areas, dog parks.
- Not introduce the shelter dog to other dogs or animals (including your own) while on your trip.
- Have a cell phone with you at all times that can be used to contact you.
- Listen and follow staff recommendation and requirements about our dogs.
- Keep the dog on a leash unless confined in your home or fenced yard.
- Return the dog at 12:30pm. There will not be staff available to take the dog back in during 12-12:30pm. If you need to return the dog before 12pm, please arrange a time with the Volunteer Coordinator.
- Children 5-years-old and over are welcome to join! We only ask that the adult (18 and over) be responsible for the dog. *** Never leave children under the age of 16 in charge of the leash or unattended with the dog.**
- Transport the dog in a safe manner by either being in a crate, either supplied by Pets in Need or your own, or safely restrained in a back seat using a seatbelt harness.
- Report any behavior or medical concerns.
- Inform us if the dog bites anyone (you included) right away.
- Utilize only positive reinforcement training (no verbal or physical punishment).
- Present the dog in a positive way to potential adopters and members of the public.
