Evicted from his Logan Square barber shop, a young Latino navigates an uncertain future while facing his fraught history with his father.
About this Event

Cutting Parallel explores the history between a young, Latinx barber and aspiring rapper named Cyrus and his father, Mario – each navigating life on the fringe. Cyrus desires to forge his own way in the world; Mario predominantly thinks and speaks about the past while trying to make up for his mistakes, chiefly his absence during Cyrus’ childhood. Cyrus, recently evicted from his barber shop (again) yet always looking forward, envisions how he might rise above circumstances of his own that parallel his father’s.Shira Baron is a Queer filmmaker born and raised in Chicago. She is passionate about amplifying underrepresented voices both in front of and behind the camera, striving to tell meaningful, authentic stories that reflect the diversity and resilience of Chicago’s communities. Paul McComas (co-producer; co-editor), the author of five critically acclaimed books of fiction, is an American Film Institute award-winning filmmaker. He is currently co-directing (with 2005 Sundance Fellow Bridget Harris) the animated feature film Unplugged, based on Paul's award-winning 2002 novel.
