About this Event

Have you found something that may be archaeological? You may be a metal detectorist, fieldwalker or mudlark, or just someone digging in the garden. We can examine your finds, as long as they are portable (something you can carry) and have been found, rather than purchased.

This is a drop-in event, but it is helpful if you can book a ticket so we have an idea of who's coming. If you wish to collect any finds, please make sure we know which finds you are expecting to collect at least a week in advance.

We can:

  • Take in objects for identifying and recording
  • In some cases, 'spot-record' a small number of finds
  • Return objects that we have borrowed
  • Provide information on recording with the Portable Antiquities Scheme

Please note that we do not provide valuations.

Please label your finds with the findspot (National Grid Reference or What3Words), date of discovery, and any relevant reference numbers. In most cases, it is best to bring them in a small, clear box or bag, such as a crystal or takeaway style box or a gripseal or sandwich bag.

If we take in an object for recording, we will give you a 'pink slip' that acts as a receipt, and return it after three months. In a small number of cases, we might advise you that an object needs to be considered under the Treasure Act. If so, we can explain this process and answer any questions.

If you are collecting finds, you must bring either the pink slip we gave you when we took them in, or official photo ID. We will not return finds without seeing one of these. If you do not have either, please contact us at least a week before the event so we can discuss a solution.

You can find out more about the Portable Antiquities Scheme at finds.org.uk.

For accessibility and travel information, see the Dock Museum's website.
