About this Event

How do we tell stories? Who gets to tell their story, and what do we hear?

For more than 4000 years, humans have used puppets as part of ritual: to tell stories, celebrate events, and mark ceremonies. Puppets have been found across the globe in disparate cultures, serving a multitude of purposes, ranging from sacred to silly, marking an enduring relationship between humanity and creativity.

This course is primarily about play, adaptation, and imagination but it’s also about adaptability, curiosity, and exploration. With a handful of household materials and simple principles, we will spend a little time bringing life to everyday objects then discover how they move and, more importantly, how we want them to move before developing some simple sequences that we can string together to make a story.

Participants of all ages can gather together, pick up some random materials and have fun bringing them to life and engaging in some good old, communal play!

Adam Njenga is a Kenyan puppeteer, actor, storyteller, and workshop facilitator. He currently works for the children’s playwriting charity Scene & Heard in Somers Town as a storyteller.

This event is part of the Anthropology Summer School London. For further info on other events and courses please contact: [email protected]
