Tour the grounds of the former Dorothea Dix Insane Asylum, and explore the dark and complex history of one of America's earliest asylums
About this Event

Dix Hill Asylum was the first and largest "lunatic asylum" in North Carolina history. What started as the dream of Dorothea Dix, a safe refuge for the widely abused mentally ill population of North Carolina, quickly developed into a place with a more complex legacy. Like many asylums across America, Dix had a mixed legacy, serving as the closest thing many people had to a home, as well as playing host to many abusive and infamous institutions. Join us on this historian-guided tour of the grounds of Dix Hill asylum, and learn about the complex and often dark history of mental health treatment in America.

This is a non-profit event that is free for the public to attend. This is a history tour, not a ghost tour, M**der tour, or anything else of the type. It is an outdoor tour, since the former hospital buildings are not accessible to the public.
