The Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, is one of the most biologically rich bodies of water on Earth—dubbed “The World’s Aquarium” by Jacques Cousteau. This narrow sea teems with life, from vibrant coral reefs and massive whale migrations to elusive hammerheads and playful sea lions. Its dramatic underwater landscapes, shaped by tectonic forces, make it a diver’s paradise blending stunning geology with unforgettable marine encounters.

🎤 January Speaker: Andrew Gottscho, Biologist & Diver
Andrew is a passionate diver and biologist who brings over two decades of dive experience to his scientific lens. He earned his PADI certification in high school and went on to major in marine biology at UC Santa Cruz—logging over 50 dives on the Great Barrier Reef while studying abroad.
Andrew later earned a PhD focused on the genetics and evolution of desert life on the Baja California peninsula. In his talk, he’ll share insights from this work in a diver-focused presentation about the geology, biology, and evolutionary wonders of the Gulf of California.
With roughly 250 dives under his belt in locations like Baja, the Galapagos, and the Red Sea, Andrew offers a unique perspective on the intersection of earth science and marine life. Currently working in genomics in Pleasanton, Andrew lives in Oakland and is excited to connect with the local dive community while taking a pause from global exploration to enjoy fatherhood.
Whether you’re in it for the science, the diving stories, or just a good beer and dive buddies—don’t miss this one!
