True Barnes, Central Coast Regional Manager – Reef Check

This month, we’re thrilled to welcome True Barnes from Reef Check, an international non-profit organization that empowers divers to protect our oceans. Reef Check trains volunteer divers to monitor reef and kelp forest health using scientifically rigorous methods. These citizen science efforts play a vital role in conservation and ocean policy decisions worldwide.
True will share insights on California’s kelp forests, the threats they face, and what Reef Check is doing to restore them. A California native raised in Half Moon Bay, True brings a wealth of experience in scientific diving, conservation, and marine education. From diving the Pacific Northwest to teaching at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and now managing Reef Check’s work on the Central Coast, True’s passion for marine ecosystems will inspire divers of all experience levels to get involved.
