For artists new to the medium, you’ll learn about the best materials and methods to get you up to speed creating successful paintings.
For those artists who have experience in pastel, you’ll get try other art media that compliment pastel, and new exciting ways to use them to express your artistic ideas.
In this relaxed class atmosphere, you will learn about the best materials to use, techniques for applying the pastel to achieve different textures, and tools and products that give the artist a successful outcome for their painting.
If you want to be a part of the class but don’t want to purchase a lot of supplies, everything will be available by the instructor for you to try.
Malia is a pastel artist from Locust, North Carolina. She has studied pastel painting with many nationally known pastel artists. Malia’s award-winning work has been included in state and national exhibitions. Her paintings received a first place and Honorable Mention award in the animal category of Pastel Magazine Pastel 100 Competition.

SUGGESTED Supply List (Don’t worry if you don’t have everything because I always bring extra supplies)
Reference photos. Select subjects meaningful to you and that you feel confident drawing. Ideally they should have a good range of dark, medium and light values.
Whatever pastels (not oil pastels) you might have. Ideally bring a mix of hard and soft pastels in a good range of dark, medium and light version of each color.
NuPastels from Prismacolor are a good choice to learn with
A backing board or drawing board (a half sheet of Dollar store foam core board works very well)
Table easel
Baby wipes for your hands
A sketch book and soft pencils or charcoal
An apron or old shirt
Artist’s tape or drafting tape
Old brushes in various sizes
I will supply Uart paper for everyone.
