Digital Mould-Making for Biomaterials
About this Event
In this session, you’ll learn how to turn a simple drawing or graphic design into a three-dimensional mould. You’ll be guided through preparing your design as an SVG file, importing it a free 3D modelling software and developing it into a form that can be prepared for 3D printing.
The workshop introduces 3D modelling through a practical material application. You’ll explore the potential of using custom moulds within biomaterial practice, including how they can be used to shape, cast, press and test different materials.
This workshop is suitable for beginners and anyone interested in biomaterials, digital fabrication, graphic design, product design or material experimentation. You do not need any previous experience with 3D modelling, CAD software or 3D printing.
By the end of the session, you will have created your own digital mould file, ready to be 3D printed and used in future material experiments.
What’s included:
- A live guided workshop, available online and in person
- An introduction to creating digital moulds for biomaterials
- Guidance using SVG files and Tinkercad
- A finished file ready for 3D printing
- Time for questions during the session
Please note: you will need to bring or have access to a laptop and a charger and create a free Tinkercad account before the session.
Meet your instructor
Charlie Butterfield is a graphic designer and biodesign researcher exploring digital fabrication and biomaterials.
Her practice combines 3D modelling with material experimentation, including projects that use custom 3D-printed moulds to guide the growth of living root systems. Through her workshops, she introduces accessible approaches to digital design and biomaterial making.
