Eating and drinking are deeply connected to comfort, health, independence, culture, and quality of life. As we age — and especially as dementia progresses — changes in swallowing function, nutrition, and mealtime safety can become increasingly common and emotionally challenging for both individuals and caregivers.
Join Lauren Ewing, seasoned Speech-Language Pathologist and Evergreen Certified Dementia Care Specialist, for a compassionate and educational workshop focused on understanding swallowing changes, promoting safe nutrition and hydration, and navigating difficult care decisions with dignity and person-centered support.
During this workshop, we will discuss:
• Typical swallowing changes associated with normal aging
• How dementia can impact swallowing safety, nutrition, hydration, and mealtime behaviors
• Signs and symptoms of swallowing difficulty (dysphagia)
• Practical strategies caregivers can implement to promote safer oral intake
• Modified diets and thickened liquids: risks, benefits, and quality-of-life considerations
• Supporting nutrition and hydration throughout the progression of dementia
• Patient-centered decision making related to eating, drinking, comfort, and personal wishes
Special attention will be given to balancing safety recommendations with an individual’s personal values and quality of life. Discussions will include situations in which individuals and families may choose to prioritize comfort, enjoyment, and autonomy despite known risks associated with eating and drinking.
This workshop is appropriate for dementia caregivers, healthcare professionals, older adults, and anyone interested in learning more about nutrition, swallowing, and person-centered dementia care.
*Please note: This workshop is educational in nature and is not intended to provide individualized medical or legal advice. Lauren Ewing will be speaking from her professional experience as a clinician and dementia care specialist working alongside patients and families navigating swallowing disorders, nutrition concerns, and complex care decisions.*
Cost: $30/person
