A storytelling workshop inspired by the built environment of diasporas past, present, and futureDiaspora Cityscapes
A workshop by Bianca Weeko Martin & Michael Nyarkoh
Jumping off the recent publication and global book launch journey of Architectural Guide Manila, this workshop is situated in storytelling inspired by the built environment of diasporas past, present, and future. We will create our own personal guidebooks - to ancestral homes, childhood memories, collective dreams, glimpses of homeland in strip malls.
How can architecture reflect material truths and inspire speculative stories? Can we imagine parallel diaspora-verses where our cultures are more than just a "minority"? Author Bianca Weeko Martin and cultural producer Michael Nyarkoh will guide participants in crafting new alternatives, using written, visual, and physical prompts drawn from the content of the Architectural Guide. These prompts also draw from the emerging work of Filipino-Canadian community members, including designer Averill Dimabuyu and artist Revill Villanueva.
Bianca Weeko Martin is a writer, researcher, and artist based in Toronto. She is the author of Architectural Guide Manila (DOM Publishers, 2024) and is currently collaborating with experience designers, public artists, and a Haitian dance choreographer. Other interests at the moment include Filipino martial arts and scuba diving.
Michael Nyarkoh is a Toronto based creative producer, working in publishing, fashion and culture. He is obsessed with reading magazines, drinking cortados and people watching. Michael currently works at Ace Hotel Toronto as the Community and Marketing Manager.
