🥾 Description
Discover the South Downs at their most striking on this varied and invigorating hike from Hassocks to Shoreham-by-Sea. This route showcases the very best of the landscape, with three notable climbs, each rewarded by sweeping, memorable views.

Right from the start, the trail winds through rare chalk grassland before ascending Wolstonbury Hill, an ancient and atmospheric rise with expansive views over the Sussex Weald. It’s a steady, breath catching climb, but the peaceful summit more than repays the effort.

Next comes a rewarding climb to the iconic legendary Devil’s Dyke—a dramatic, steep-sided valley shaped by erosion (or, as local legend suggests, carved by the Devil himself). From the ridge, take in vast panoramas stretching across the countryside and, on a clear day, all the way to the sea—one of the finest viewpoints in South East England.

From there, the pace eases as the route joins sections of the South Downs Way and follows the River Adur, guiding you on a relaxed and scenic finish into Shoreham-by-Sea.

🌟 Highlights

  • Wolstonbury Hill: Peaceful and panoramic; an ancient landmark shrouded in mystery.
  • Devil’s Dyke Viewpoint: A breathtaking ridge-top spectacle—possibly the finest view in the South East.
  • Edburton Hill: A quiet ridge above the escarpment, ideal for reflection and rest.
  • South Downs Way: Follow this iconic national trail across open ridges and rolling fields.
