Born in Scotland and trained in the art of sculpture by the legendary Julius Melchers, John Donaldson formed a partnership with Henry J. Meier in 1880 that helped shape Detroit’s architectural legacy for decades.
Join author, photographer, and architectural historian Dale A. Carlson for an examination of Donaldson and the three Meiers with whom he partnered, featuring many of their surviving works, including the University of Michigan Museum of Art, St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Beaumont Tower, and the Bird House—landmarks that continue to define Michigan’s architectural heritage.
Included with museum general admission.
