Designed for who?How welcoming does York feel for women and girls?
As part of York International Womenโs Week 2026, the Make Space York project is hosting an evening of conversation about how public spaces shape our everyday lives and how gender can affect the way we experience the city.
From streets and parks to lighting, transport and public buildings, this event explores who our city is designed for and who can feel left out.
We will be joined by a small panel of people working across architecture, transport and lighting, alongside lived experience of using Yorkโs public spaces. There will be time for audience questions, shared reflections, and informal activities before and after the panel if you would like to take part. And yes, there is a bar.
Together, we will explore how design, planning and policy shape who feels welcome in the city, and what practical change could look like for women and girls in York.
This event is open to anyone who uses public space and is interested in making York a city where women and girls feel safe, welcome and able to belong.
Tickets must be booked in advance.

The Make Space York project is linked with Friends of Rowntree Park for the project on creating welcoming parks for teenage girls.
