Derek & The Cats is the brainchild of Derek Mathias. The band is an 8-piece ensemble that comprises a dynamic lineup of musicians. They are versatile as a band, as they have different set ups depending on the size of the stage. They have performed not only as an 8-piece act but also as a 5-piece. They completely rearrange their music depending on the set up and hence, their set always remains fresh and there’s something new to experience every time.Derek & The Cats is based in Bangalore, India, and they’re currently working on their 2nd Album and plan to release a few singles starting from March 2024. In February 2024, they performed in Mumbai for the first time at the G5A Foundation for Contemporary Culture. They have performed to an audience of 2000 people at the Oddball Festival 2023, Bangalore, and shared the stage with The Aristocrats, Blackstratblues, Bloodywood and Sanjeev T. They have also performed at Sofar Bangalore with their 5-piece set up and their live performance is available on the Sofar Youtube Channel.
They’ve released 2 singles - ‘Soul’ and ‘Morocco’, which was followed by their debut self-titled album in July 2022. Rolling Stone India considered their debut album as one of the Top 15 Indian Albums of 2022. In January 2023, they released a live EP - ‘Live at
Fandom’, which consists of 2 songs from their debut show. The 1st one is a live version of their song, ‘The Heist’, and the 2nd being a cover of a Snarky Puppy favorite, ‘What About Me?’. You can experience these live performances on their Youtube channel.
