250 years ago, the United States began with a Declaration of Independence to establish a nation grounded in the belief that we are all created equal, with inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Today, democratic backsliding is weakening institutions and norms, undermining the rule of law, and eroding fundamental rights and freedoms in the United States and around the world.
Join us at Beloit College for The Future of Democracy, a timely public lecture series exploring the causes of democratic backsliding, how it affects us, and what we can do about it.

Jasmine Nears is a proud Beloit College alum, democracy strategist, and national leader working at the forefront of civic engagement and voting rights.
She currently serves as Chief of Staff at America Votes, a national organization coordinating over 400 organizations across the United States to win elections and advance voting rights. Nears helps lead strategy and she builds the systems, teams, and alignment needed to win in some of the most consequential elections of our time. Her path into politics wasn’t linear. Nears has always been interested in public life; she often says politics found her, transforming that interest into a career grounded in impact. She was a McNair Scholar at Beloit and later earned a Master of Public Administration. These experiences continue to shape her approach to leadership and public service.
Nears began her national work with Everytown for Gun Safety, leading advocacy campaigns across the Mid-Atlantic, before helping shape electoral strategy in Wisconsin as State Director and later Director of Strategic Initiatives at America Votes. Her work has earned national recognition, including a group Pollie Award from the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) for the 2023 Wisconsin Supreme Court race and recognition as a Gain Power State MVP.
She is also a mother of two and an adventurer at heart, having traveled to Antarctica and taken the polar plunge. Returning to Beloit, she looks forward to connecting with students as both an alum and a collaborator in imagining what comes next.
