During this support group we will discuss how communication changes as the dementia disease process progresses, and we will teach you strategies for communicating effectively at every
stage.
In the early stage, individuals can still participate in meaningful conversations, so caregivers and others should include them in discussions, listen patiently, and allow time for
responses.
During the middle stage, communication becomes more difficult, making it important to speak slowly and clearly, ask simple questions, minimize distractions, and provide
reassurance and visual cues.
In the late stage, it may be necessary for you to focus on nonverbal communication, such as gestures, facial expressions, and sounds. Throughout every stage, people with dementia should be treated with patience, dignity, respect, and compassion, and we will help you to identify what that looks like.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify common communication changes that may occur as the disease progresses through the early, middle, and late stages.
2. Describe effective communication strategies for interacting with individuals with dementia at each stage of the disease.
3. Demonstrate the importance of patience, dignity, respect, and nonverbal communication when communicating with individuals who have advanced dementia.
