Death in the Garden

Assembling in the cemetery, we will gather with Livia on A L T A R for a reading of her essay Death in the garden: Patrick Byrne's mortuary chapel at Goldenbridge Cemetery, Dublin.

Dr. Livia Hurley is a Design-Fellow at the School of Architecture, UCD. Livia has published widely on Irish architecture and was co-editor and principal author of ‘Architecture 1600-2000’, Volume IV of the Art and Architecture of Ireland project. Livia is the Chair of the Irish Georgian Society Conservation Awards Jury; and a Trustee of the Revelstoke Trust, Lambay Island, County Dublin.

Participants are asked to remove their shoes when they gather on A L T A R.

This event may be documented by film and still photography. The film will be screened and images used for publishing, press and social media.

A L T A R is a site-responsive intervention for Goldenbridge Cemetery by artist Clodagh Emoe and architect Donal Lally. A L T A R explores how we, the living and the dead, are intrinsically connected with the natural world. A L T A R draws on the material and essence of plant life, creating a gathering space between the interior of the 18th-century Mortuary Chapel and the canopy of the ancient Beech Tree.
