About this Event

Cost: FREE for cooperative members, $50 full-day PD for attendees outside the cooperative, $25 half-day PD for attendees outside the cooperative (Speech CE credit - $25)

About the Workshop:

The target audience for this workshop is all staff who work with students.  Participants will be able to recognize the stages of an escalating crisis and evidenced-based techniques to appropriately de-escalate a situation with considerations to neuroaffirming care and supporting students with autism.

Anticipated Outcomes:

  1. Participants will learn to organize their thinking about how behavior escalates and how to respond appropriately during moments of chaos.
  2. Participants will be able to recognize and identify the various stages of verbal escalation.
  3. Participants will learn to recognize how to manage their own consistent, calm behavior in order to influence a positive outcome in a crisis situation with considerations of neuroaffirming care
  4. Participants will develop limit-setting strategies when verbally intervening to de-escalate defensive behaviors
  5. Participants will learn prevention and verbal de-escalation strategies.
  6. Participants will explore a framework to help guide staff and the individuals in distress through a process of re-establishing the relationship.
