DC Writers' Salon Writing Lab: What’s In Your Closet?

Our lives are surrounded by objects—and the things we keep often carry stories of their own. A worn photograph, a favorite book, a piece of jewelry, or an everyday object can hold memory, emotion, history, and meaning. Objects can become sources of discovery, attachment, sensory detail, and creative inspiration.

This workshop will help you:

• Discover how everyday objects can spark ideas, memories, and new directions for your writing
• Explore objects as tools for generating material across different forms and genres (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, experimental – wherever inspiration takes you)
• Learn how to use objects to add sensory detail, symbolism, emotional resonance, and layers of meaning to your work
• Experiment with object-centered writing prompts and approaches

This workshop is led by DC Writers' Salon member, Raegan O'Lone. Raegan’s writing has appeared in literary journals and anthologies. Her personal essay about lipstick, which was about far more than makeup, was awarded First Place in Bethesda Magazine/Bethesda Urban Partnership’s Essay Contest. She recently completed a novel about a museum where objects give voice to the unresolved stories people want to release from their lives.
