David O. Stewart Lecture
About this Event
The founding of Montgomery County 250 years ago will be the subject of a lecture on Wednesday, June 10 by acclaimed historian and author David O. Stewart.
Stewart, a retired attorney and lifelong student of the founding of the nation, will explore the circumstances under which the southern and western parts of enormous Frederick County were split off in 1776 to form the new counties of Montgomery and Washington. (Why was our county named "Montgomery"? Come and hear the full story.)
He will also discuss the role in 1774 of future Montgomery County founders in protesting British taxes and the closure of the port of Boston, showing solidarity with their fellow patriots and protesters in Boston, through their signing of the Hungerford Resolves at a tavern on the site of the future Rockville, Md.
Finally, Stewart will touch on aspects of the new county's support for the American Revolution after independence was declared on July 4, 1776. Maryland regiments fought with exceptional valor and effectiveness in many key battles of the Revolution, and Stewart will highlight some of them.
Stewart's lecture will be sponsored by Historic Medley District and Montgomery History as part of the MoCo250 celebration.
