On the behavioural blind spot – lessons learned and forgotten from the GFC
About this Event

The role of human psychology is recognized as a central factor in bank crises, driving the behaviour of market participants, exuberance, herding, panic and self-fulfilling prophecies that characterize bubbles and bank runs, and contribute to broader financial instability.

A key ingredient is the behaviour within banks, and the factors that influence individual, team and organizational decisions, action and inaction.

The discussion will explore examples of how behaviour within banks contributed to the global financial crisis and a range of other incidents, collapses and scandals since; and examine whether there are useful lessons from other industries and their approach to accidents, risk and human psychology.

David Grosse has 30 years’ experience in Financial Services, encompassing RBS, Barclays, CLSA, Deutsche Bank and HSBC. Roles that included the Head of Operational Risk at Barclays Capital and the Asia Pacific COO at CLSA. At HSBC he formed a behavioural science team as part of a wider conduct and culture remit and now works with Banks, Industry Bodies and Regulators to advise on Behavioural Risk Management. He is a Chartered Accountant, has an MSc in Behavioural Science and is a member of the Global Association of Applied Behavioural Scientists.

Dr Nippin Anand is a former master mariner with a Ph.D. in Social Sciences and Anthropology. Nippin brings a transdisciplinary lens to the challenges of work and accident investigation, focusing on the social psychology of risk and how failures can be turned into opportunities for learning and change. He is founder and CEO of Novellus Solutions, a consultancy specializing in learning, risk and decision making and is the author of “Are We Learning from Accidents” an inquiry into the capsizing of the Costa Concordia.
