Voices of My Fathers is a historical novel in nine parts. It explores Scoboria's family history over the past 500 years through the eyes of the characters, some fictional, some genuine. Each story attempts to put the reader into the character's life, allowing them to experience some of the stresses that arose during that time period.
The first four stories are fictional, but each one has historical accuracy and some features are true. Story two takes place at Skyburriowe Farm in Cornwall, a place which still exists, although the author knows nothing of the character in the story. Story four takes place on a British warship during the Napoleonic Wars. The rosters of these ships include a sailor named Scoboria. The later stories are nearly factual, though put into a story form, leading up to World War II and the Vietnam War.
Dave Scoboria was born in 1950 on 40 acres of farmland in Eastern Pennsylvania. His parents were both schoolteachers, born in Brooklyn, graduates of Tufts College.
After high school graduation in 1968, Dave spent a year working on an Arctic Station in the middle of the Arctic Ocean. Two years were spent at Reed College in Portland, followed by three years traveling around the country, picking fruit and resolving his situation with the draft. Dave attended Evergreen State College and graduated in 1975.
For the next forty plus years Dave worked in commercial construction in Seattle and Bellingham, starting as a union carpenter, working up to project superintendent. In 2001 his wife and him founded a commercial construction company, ran it for 18 years, sold the company and retired in 2019. For the past six years, Dave has been writing, working on the houses of his children, and dealing with esophageal cancer. Currently, he is a patient in a drug trial at the Fred Hutch Cancer Institute in Seattle.
