The lights are on, the stage is set, and now we wait for the clowns to arrive. That's where you come in!
Welcome to a wild four-hour ride where you'll learn clowning tools to create a clown turn and perform it that very same night. Designed for improvisers, stand-up comedians, and anyone curious enough to step onstage, this playful, hands-on workshop introduces Canadian clowning as a powerful approach to strengthening physical choices, emotional clarity, and storytelling.
Participants will arrive with a one-minute "Fantastic Task"—a simple skill or joyful activity they already know how to do-which becomes the starting point for exploration. Through group games, guided physical exploration, and improvisation, you'll discover how self-created masks, physical "colours," and imaginative commitment sharpen character, heighten offers, and deepen scene work. Canadian clowning invites you to trust your impulses, follow your curiosity and uncover the unexpected in yourself.
Stepping onstage for the first time is always the hardest part, and this workshop helps you meet that challenge head-on. You'll leave with practical tools to take bolder risks, play with greater confidence, create more dynamic and embodied comedy, and-best of all-a brand-new clown turn that you'll perform that very night.
About Lauren Brady
Lauren Brady is an international award-winning performer, director and teacher specialising in contemporary clown and physical comedy. Based in Canada, she is the founder of Bad Knees Studios and creator of the acclaimed solo show SWAN?, which has toured the Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Edinburgh Fringe. Lauren has taught clowning throughout Canada and Australia, helping performers unlock confidence, creativity and authentic stage presence through play. Lauren is performing at Darwin Festival with her show SWAN?
To finish the day, participants will have the opportunity to perform in a live Comedy Clowning Showcase, putting their new skills into practice in front of a supportive audience. Workshop participants receive complimentary entry to the showcase and do not need to purchase a separate ticket.
