Darlith Agoriadol yr Athro Rob Bolam|Professor Rob Bolam Inaugural Lecture

Dechreuodd yr Athro Rob Boilam ei daith fel prentis yn British Aerospace ac astudiodd yn Sefydliad Addysg Uwch Gogledd-ddwyrain Cymru. Ers hynny mae wedi ennill cydnabyddiaeth am gydweithio ar ystod eang o brosiectau awyrennau sifil a milwrol rhyngwladol. Ym 1992, sefydlodd Altitude Products Ltd., ymgynghoriaeth gweithgynhyrchu a dylunio offer awyrennau, a redodd tan 2004.

Trosglwyddodd Rob i’r byd academaidd fel uwch ddarlithydd yng Ngholeg Glannau Dyfrdwy lle bu’n rheoli rhaglen Prentisiaethau Awyrenegol. Mae’n Gymrawd gweithredol o’r Gymdeithas Awyrenegol Frenhinol ac yn gadeirydd is-bwyllgor y gynhadledd ar gyfer Pwyllgor Gyriant Cyfun IMechE / RAeS. Mae wedi trefnu digwyddiadau a chynadleddau yn WU ac wedi sefydlu'r cwrs MSc mewn Technoleg Awyrennau Heb Griw. Ar hyn o bryd mae’n bennaeth ar y labordy Gyriant Trydanol ac arweiniodd y prosiect ymchwil dwy flynedd FastFan yn llwyddiannus. Mae’n mwynhau rhannu ei brofiadau diwydiannol gyda myfyrwyr a chydweithwyr a datblygu cysyniadau arloesol i gyflawni manteision cymdeithasol.

Bydd y ddarlith yn rhoi cefndir i flynyddoedd ffurfiannol Rob a cyn cyffwrdd â rhai o’r prosiectau peirianneg awyrenegol y mae wedi bod yn rhan ohonynt yn ystod rhan ddiwydiannol ei yrfa. Bydd y gynulleidfa’n cael mynd ar daith drwy’r cysyniadau diweddaraf sy’n cael eu harchwilio gan Labordy Gyriant Trydanol Prifysgol Wrecsam. ‘Gweithio gydag Ynni’ yw’r agwedd i leihau effeithiau newid hinsawdd. Bydd Rob yn egluro sut y gall 'gweithio gydag ynni' ymestyn ystod hedfan awyren fwy na 30% neu sut y gellir storio ynni dros ben mewn blychau ar gyfer adegau o brinder.

Professor Rob Bolam started his journey as an apprentice at British Aerospace and studied at the Northeast Wales Institute of Higher Education. He has since gained recognition from having collaborated on a wide range of international civil and military aircraft projects. In 1992, he founded Altitude Products Ltd. an aircraft equipment manufacturing and design consultancy, which he ran until 2004.

Rob transitioned to academia as a senior lecturer at Deeside College where he programme-managed Aeronautical Apprenticeships. He is an active Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and chaired the conference sub-committee for the IMechE / RAeS Combined Propulsion Committee. He has organised events and conferences at WU and established the MSc course in Uncrewed Aircraft Technology. He currently heads-up the Electrical Propulsion laboratory and successfully led the two-year FastFan research project. He enjoys sharing his industrial experiences with students and colleagues and developing innovative concepts to achieve societal benefits.

The lecture will provide background to Rob’s formative years and touch on some of the aeronautical engineering projects he has been involved with during the industrial part of his career. The audience will be treated to a journey through the latest concepts being explored by Wrexham University’s Electrical Propulsion Laboratory. ‘Working with Energy’ is the key to minimising the effects of climate change. Rob will explain how ‘working with energy ‘can extend an aircraft’s flight range by more than 30% or how surplus energy can be stored in boxes for a ‘rainy day’.
