-------------------------------------
Catherine Magill was introduced to CI in the early 90’s while studying a Bachelor of Arts (Dance) at Adelaide University. On completing her degree Catherine returned to her hometown of Sydney, where she took regular classes with Helen Clarke Lapin, who had danced extensively in the States during the late 80’s, with many of the founding members CI. In the following years Catherine attended numerous local and international workshops deepening her CI enquiry and practice, learning from teachers such as Martin Hughes and State of Flux, Peter Bingham, Martin Keogh, Julyen Hamilton, Kirstie Simpson, Nina Martin, Katie Duck and Nita Little. In 2000 Catherine participated in a 7-day intensive with Nancy Stark Smith, Susan Schell and Karen Nelson, at Earthdance Massachusetts, USA. At this residency she learnt the Underscore from Nancy Stark Smith and participated in the first Global Underscore. Returning home Catherine shared the work with the Sydney CI dancers and established a monthly Underscore practice.
In 2012, fuelled by her CI passion, Catherine moved to Melbourne. Over the past decades Catherine has been a leading organiser and teacher in both the Sydney and Melbourne CI communities. She has taught in community, tertiary and mixed abilities settings, both locally and abroad.
For four years Catherine was part of the organising team for the 5-day residential event The Australian Contact Improvisation Convergence.
Catherine’s practice and teaching is grounded in the traditional principles of CI. She is a known devotee of the rolling point of contact and loves the challenge and fun of dancing o center, constantly falling and sharing weight. Catherine’s teaching is informed by her work as a Pilates Practitioner and Performance Improvisor, making her classes both rigorous and entertaining.
