Courses description
Cyanotype is an alternative photographic printing process dating back to the 1800s that produces blue prints, typically using coated paper and light. In this workshop, we will be printing our cyanotypes on fabric instead of paper. The options are endless - as long as the fabric is white (or almost white) and is made of natural material, you can print on it. This is the perfect opportunity to take cyanotypes to the next level, and up-cycle an old t-shirt or tote bag in the process! What better way than by turning it into a one of a kind piece of art? We will use a range of materials to make our prints, including flowers, leaves, negatives, or any other semi transparent objects. Please see the materials list as you will need to bring in something to print on - a t-shirt, tote bag, fabric mask, scarf, pillow case.
This workshop is in the darkroom, it is very much a standing workshop and in a small space.
Material List
Please bring something to print on - a t-shirt, tote bag, fabric mask, scarf, pillow case, flag, etc - as long as it is white and made of natural fibers, cotton, linen, hemp, rayon, and silk work well (wool does not). The molecules in your cyanotype solution will not bind to synthetic fibers and your image will wash away (very important!). Test/scrap material will be provided.
Materials - Bring anything you would like to make a print of such as negatives, digital negatives, drawings or writings on semi transparent paper/transparency film, flowers, leaves, etc.
The prints you make in the class will be wet at the end of the session, so please bring something to transport wet prints or materials in - either a carrier bag or blotting book (watercolour pads work great for this)
