About this Event
In this workshop, textile artist and designer Aukje Boonstra, will use simple machine and hand sewing techniques, to help you to transform an outdated piece of clothing into a unique wearable art piece.
It can take bravery to start cutting into a garment but not when you have someone like Aukje to guide you, showing you how and where to cut and the many ways they can be put back together again.
This workshop is about deconstructing and reconstructing a garment. Aukje will help you decide what you do and don't like about it and take the courage to cut away what you don't like. Using additional pieces of cut-up clothing and materials to complement the main garment, Aukje will show you how it can be stitched back together into a unique outfit.
Techniques will be demonstrated to finish off edges and hems with knitting and other yarns on the sewing machine as well as using embroidery yarn in the bobbin.

Aukje Boonstra Textile Artist
When Aukje’s journey in the textile arts started in the late nineties she discovered the treasures to be found in thrift shops. Ever since then she has been working with rescued materials. First it was the challenge and the fun to create something of beauty out of what other's discard. Then it became a passion to keep clothing out of landfill and raise awareness of pollution and appalling working conditions in the textile industry.
Aukje’s area of expertise is the transformation of thrift shop clothing into unique sustainable couture, hand stitching and eco-dyeing. These techniques she has been teaching in workshops and textile forums Australia-wide for over 20 years. She has been active in Eco festivals and parades of Sustainable Couture.
Aukje had three solo exhibitions and was part of many joined art shows.
Apart from transforming clothing, she makes wall hangings and wrapping cloths (Furoshiki) and more, all using recycled materials.
Aukje is based in Ulverstone at NW Coast of Tasmania
