Did you see the spectacular partial eclipse of the sun on August the 12th?
Whether or not you were able to see it, you may be aware that the sun has just passed the most active phase of its cycle with many sunspots, several large solar flares, and lots of auroral activity.
Many solar space observatories have been watching the Sun over the past few decades including SoHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory), Hinode and the Solar Dynamics Observatory. NASA’s Parker Solar Probe was launched in 2018 and ESA’s Solar Orbiter in 2020.
These satellites have travelled closer to the Sun than ever before, to study the solar surface and the solar wind - with some fascinating results.
This talk will review the latest findings about our dynamic Sun and how it affects the Earth's environment (space weather).
Helen will also share her work leading the SunSpaceArt project, with a team of scientists and artists who have worked together for over a decade alongside thousands of children and teachers across the UK, funded by STFC – the Science and Technology Facilities Council, a major public funding and research body in the UK, which operates as one of the councils under the UK Research and Innovation, or UKRI.
