About this Event

Queer Voices NYC Film Festival is proud to present Our Queer Lens, in partnership with the CUNY Film Festival. Join us for a beautiful evening celebrating queer history, legacy, and storytelling rooted in the Harlem Renaissance.

The night features a special screening of Brother to Brother, directed by Rodney Evans—a powerful, moving film that bridges generations of Black queer experiences in 1920s New York City.


ABOUT THE FILM

Brother to Brother is a feature-length drama that uncovers the often-overlooked queer voices of the Harlem Renaissance. The story follows an elderly Black writer who forms an unexpected bond with a young gay college student, as they navigate identity, artistry, and survival in NYC.

Cast: Anthony Mackie, Roger Robinson, Larry Gilliard Jr., Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Duane Boutté, Daniel Sunjata, Alex Burns, and Ray Ford

An intimate conversation with director Rodney Evans, moderated by Robert Robinson, Professor of African Studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

About the Director: RODNEY EVANS is a fiction and documentary filmmaker. His feature-length documentary, VISION PORTRAITS, had its World Premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. It played theatrically in major U.S cities to wide acclaim.

His debut fiction feature BROTHER TO BROTHER won the Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize in Drama. The film garnered four Independent Spirit Award nominations, including Best Debut Performance for Anthony Mackie and Best Supporting Male Actor for Roger Robinson.

His recent short PORTAL is currently streaming as part of Black Public Media’s AfroPop Digital Shorts series. Evans is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Creative Capital Award, Sundance Momentum Fellowship, Ford/Mellon Disability Futures Fellowship and an NEH/Firelight Media Spark Fund Award.
