About this Event

Join us on Friday, October 9, 2026, from 6:00-8:00 PM, as Rev. Dr. Brandt L. Montgomery presents "The History of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and Saint James School."

Explore the historic area of St. James and Lappans in Washington County during this presentation. The talk will explore the history of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, consecrated in 1849 on land belonging to Dr. James T. N. Maddox, and the historic Saint James School, originally founded in 1842 and one of the oldest Episcopal boarding schools in United States. Both church and school were witnesses to many important 19th century events in Washington County, including the Civil War.

Reverend Dr. Brandt Montgomery has been the Vicar of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Boonsboro, MD, since May of 2023. He has also been serving as the Chaplain of Saint James School in Hagerstown, MD, since August 2019. Before St. Mark’s Church and Saint James School, Father Montgomery served at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Lafayette, Louisiana, as Chaplain of Ascension Episcopal School from 2014-2017, then as Associate Rector and All-School Chaplain from 2017-2019. He began his ordained ministry as the Curate at Canterbury Episcopal Chapel and Student Center at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa from 2012-2014.

Culture & Cocktails is generously sponsored by the James & Mary Schurz Foundation. C&C is held on the second Friday of each month from 6:00-8:00 PM. Doors open at 5:30 PM. Refreshments and one complimentary drink ticket are included with each ticket.

This month's cocktail will be announced in October.
