CRONOS - SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO GUILLERMO DEL TORO

🏆 Winner of the Critics’ Week Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and multiple Ariel Awards
What would you sacrifice for the promise of eternal life?
As part of PDXLAFF’s 20th anniversary, we honor visionary Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro with a special presentation of his groundbreaking debut feature, Cronos.
Long before Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, del Toro revealed his extraordinary imagination with this unforgettable film. When kindhearted antiques dealer Jesús Gris discovers an ancient golden device hidden inside a statue, its miraculous power restores his youth—but awakens a terrifying hunger and attracts others determined to possess its secret.
Blending gothic horror, dark humor, and tenderness, del Toro transforms vampire mythology into a meditation on mortality, temptation, and family love. Cronos remains a landmark of Mexican cinema and the extraordinary beginning of a visionary career.
WHY WE CHOSE THIS FILM
Because Cronos reveals that del Toro’s monsters have always carried a human soul—and that love may offer a more meaningful form of immortality.
