About This Event: A Masterclass in Observation
Crit Night at The Kube is a community-driven deep dive into the creative process. Inspired by artist-led critiques in Vancouver, we are bringing this intentional space to the Coast to help artists move past "stuck" moments and help the community learn the language of art. Our goal is to create a supportive, professional, and high-energy environment. Whether you are a presenting artist, a fellow creator, or an art lover, you will leave with a sharper eye and new perspectives on composition, mood, and technique.
Community Guidelines for Attendees
To ensure the evening is valuable for everyone, we ask all participants to keep the following "Rules of the Room" in mind:
1. The "Learning Opportunity" Mindset
Critique is a skill. As an audience member, your role is to help the artist solve a puzzle. By practicing how to analyze someone else's work, you are simultaneously training your own eye to see solutions for your own studio practice.
2. Speak the Language of Design
To keep feedback constructive, we use the 7 Elements of Design as our shared vocabulary.
Line & Direction: How does the eye move through the piece?
Colour: How do the hues interact? Is the palette harmonious or jarring?
Value: This is the lightness or darkness of a colour. Is there enough contrast to create depth?
Shape: How do the positive and negative spaces balance each other?
Size & Scale: How does the proportion of elements affect the overall impact?
Texture: Is the surface smooth, or a visual puzzle of physical layering?
Composition: How are all these elements arranged? Does the arrangement feel grounded?
3. Ask, Don't Command
The best feedback often comes in the form of a question. Instead of saying "You should make this darker," try asking, "How would the mood shift if the value in this corner was deeper?" This keeps the power in the artist's hands.
4. Respect the "Ask"
Each presenter shares exactly where they feel stuck. We honour the artist by focusing our feedback on the specific areas they’ve asked us to explore.
5. Support the Vulnerability
Putting a work-in-progress under the spotlight takes courage. We are here to "plus" the work—to add ideas and energy that help the artist move the piece forward, not to tear it down.
