Crescent, Cross and Canon : A Saga of a River Part Two-Chandannagar

Before the French, there was a Chand-er-nagore.
In Part II of Crescent, Cross and Canon: A Saga of a River, we journey into the pre-colonial world of Chand-er-nagore—a landscape shaped long before European power came to define its identity.
Along the Hooghly, communities lived, traded, worshipped and travelled, connected by the river to the wider worlds of Bengal. Beneath the later colonial façades lies an older Chandernagar of river routes, local markets, sacred spaces, merchants, boatmen and forgotten stories.
This walk invites you to look beyond the familiar French Chandernagar and discover the landscape that existed before the colonial chapter began.
Because history does not begin with the arrival of Europeans.
Sometimes, to understand a city, we must first walk through the world that existed before them.
