Creative Sewing Skills for Youth: Mondays

Learn the basics of sewing to bring your imagination to life!

This class serves as an introduction to sewing a strong project. The curriculum is structured to facilitate progression from machine introduction and beginner competency to sewing with confidence.

Beginning projects include:

1. Drawstring Bag
2. Circle Pillow
3. Pillow Case

Intermediate and independent projects:

1. Once a student has acquired the necessary skills and confidence to work semi-independently the instructor will work in cooperation with each student to create projects tailored to their interest and increasing ability

Skills taught

1. Threading and operating a sewing machine safely and independently
2. Understanding sewing terms
3. How to follow instructions and create a project
4. How to identify and correctly use tools
5. Measuring marking and cutting increasing varieties of fabrics
6. How to progress from straight line-only sewing to navigating curves turning corners and building dimensional projects from flat patterns
7. How to identify problems and find solutions
8. How to deconstruct and recreate projects

No sewing experience required. Fabric purchase by student. Some fabrics available at RFA. All sewing equipment is provided.
