Meet the Artists’ Alliance — a storied contemporary artist collective that shaped the culture and history of downtown Lafayette. From their inception in 1986, the members of the Artists’ Alliance identified a need for a true haven of experimental art in Lafayette, interdisciplinary in both practice and mission. From radical performance art to evocative installation pieces, they brought together painters, dancers, photographers, musicians, all under the banner of the contemporary. And for 14 years, until they disbanded in 1999, they played an integral part in transforming downtown Lafayette into the cultural center it is today.
In this intimate evening of intergenerational discussion, you’ll have the rare opportunity to not only hear these stories that defined an era, but to join the conversation yourselves. What has changed for artists since the 90s? What has remained the same? What does it mean to create a space for yourself where one didn’t exist before? What does it take to maintain it on your own? This is the culture in conversation with itself — where it has been, where it can be, and where it’s going.
