Coolest Block in the Lower East Side 2026 Kick-off Event

The Lower East Side Ecology Center is kicking off the beginning of the 2nd year of the Coolest Block in the Lower East Side Contest, a community-based competition promoting street tree care in the Lower East Side. Come meet other neighborhood tree lovers, learn more about our contest, ask your questions, and make a street tree sign to take home while supplies last!

Residents, community groups, block associations, schools, and local organizations are invited to compete for the title of the Coolest Block in the Lower East Side. Participants will focus on key street tree care activities such as soil aeration, mulching, watering, and general cleanup, all while showcasing creativity and community spirit.

• Neighborhood or Faith-based organizations
• Community Gardens
• Friends of groups
• Ad-hoc groups

Awards will be given in two categories:

• Coolest Block in the L.E.S. - Best resident stewarded block
• Coolest Youth Stewarded Block in the L.E.S - Best youth stewarded block

• Workshops & Resources: Participants will have access to monthly street tree care workshops, a tool lending library, and technical assistance from LES Ecology Center staff.
• Judging Criteria: Blocks will be evaluated based on soil management, creativity, and community engagement.
• Prizes: Prizes to be announced soon.
