University United Methodist Church will host “Cool Jazz, Warm Hearts” — a concert to benefit farmworker students who are part of Michigan State University’s College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) initiative, Sunday, March 22, at 6:30 pm.
For 25 years, the CAMP initiative has helped first-generation students from migrant and seasonal farmworker families succeed in their first year of college by providing academic support, social connection, and financial assistance.
Until recently, tuition for these students was funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Education. That funding has been discontinued, putting the future of the initiative and the students it serves at risk.
"We’re partnering with MSU Farmworker Student Services to make a real difference in the lives of deserving CAMP initiative students who are especially vulnerable at this time in our country. It’s an opportunity for us to take action and make an impact right in our own neighborhood.” ~ Pastor Melanie Carey
The concert will feature acclaimed jazz vocalist Tiffany Gridiron, who has deep roots in the East Lansing community, along with UUMC’s Sam Corey and several special guest musicians. Coffee, hot chocolate, and desserts will be served, and students will share their personal stories of how CAMP has transformed their educational journeys.
Admission to the concert is free and open to the community, with an opportunity to make donations at the event or in advance. UUMC also is reaching out to faith communities and organizations throughout Michigan to raise a total of $50,000. All donations go directly to support MSU CAMP farmworker students. Details on how to donate will be available soon.
The College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) is an initiative of Michigan State University’s Farmworker Student Services department. It serves MSU students who are U.S. citizens from migrant and seasonal farmworker families.
