Contemporary Floral Design Workshop

Contemporary Floral Design is an inspiring and hands-on introduction to the wide world of modern floral styles. This workshop invites students to explore the expressive, often unconventional approaches that define contemporary design today—shaped by global influences, especially the refined elegance of Japanese Ikebana.

Ideal for beginners and open to anyone aged 15 and up, this session is structured as a fun, social group experience with plenty of opportunity for individual creativity. Students will create their own arrangements using fresh seasonal flowers while learning the fundamental principles behind contemporary styles, including asymmetry, negative space, and sculptural composition.

Much of today’s floral design is indebted to Ikebana—the centuries-old Japanese art of flower arranging—which emphasizes minimalism, line, and harmony with nature. Cass School founder Faith Cass is both a contemporary design expert and an accomplished Ikebana practitioner. Having studied, taught, and competed in Japan, she brings a deep understanding of Ikebana's aesthetics and philosophy to every class. Under her influence, students will gain insight into how these traditions inform and elevate modern floral practice.

Throughout the workshop, students will receive personalized instruction from the master teachers at Cass, whose decades of combined experience ensure a rich, engaging, and supportive learning environment. The small group size allows each participant to receive feedback and guidance as they work, making this a great fit for first-timers and seasoned hobbyists alike.

In addition to arranging, the class offers a broader look at floral materials and their care. You’ll learn where and how to source flowers—whether from markets, local farms, or foraged from the landscape—and how to keep them fresh at home. We also explore the basic botany behind common flower types, as well as their historical and cultural significance in design.

Students will leave with a finished arrangement that reflects the bold, open-ended nature of contemporary floral design—one that’s personal, expressive, and shaped by the day's learning. Along the way, you’ll also be introduced to current trends, new techniques, and the wide range of creative and professional possibilities within the field.
