Are you ready to become a glaze explorer? Are you wishing that the glazes on your pots made your soul sing and enhanced your work? Do you want to understand why they work the way they do? Are you ready to dive into the adventure of luscious, vibrant, and unexpected ceramic glazes? Join us for a thrilling hands-on 3-day weekend workshop where you’ll explore color, chemistry, and the magic of fire with one of the most respected glaze educators in the field.
John Britt, a dynamic teacher, will have over 1,000 fired test tiles with both reduction and oxidation tiles. This workshop includes firing test tiles in oxidation and reduction. We will discuss all things glazes, including a general overview of ceramic glazes, focusing on but not limited to cone 6 glazes. He'll also have glazed pots for viewing.
Space is limited—register now to secure your spot!
What You’ll Explore:
This immersive workshop opens the door to a full spectrum of cone 6 glaze possibilities, perfect for curious beginners and seasoned potters alike. You’ll journey through:
How cones, kilns, and firing dynamics really work
The principles that shape different firing cycles
The inner workings of glaze families such as ash, celadon, and temmoku
How to tweak, transform, and invent your own glazes
Insights from John’s latest book, The Complete Guide to Mid-Range Glazes, plus deeper dive material not included in print
You’ll mix and fire a wide range of cone 6 glazes and create a generous library of test tiles, half for electric firing, half for reduction, using porcelain, white stoneware, and dark clay bodies. Test tiles will be prepared in advance so you can jump right into exploration. Each participant will explore a unique base glaze and create 10 color variations, tested in both oxidation and reduction.
What to bring:
OSHA-approved respirator or dust mask and several labeled quart-size ziplock bag
Journal, pen, Sharpies, high-temperature (underglaze) pencil (Available for purchase at our supply store)
One pair of latex gloves
Immersion blender
Small materials scoop
Ten 16-oz Solo cups (red, blue, or clear) + a couple of glaze brushes
Important: Make sure your blender fits to the bottom of the cup!
Triple-beam or digital scale (one per two students)
Your scale MUST measure accurately to 0.1 grams.
Test it beforehand—many inexpensive scales cap out at 2 grams or are unreliable.
If you’re excited to expand your glaze vocabulary, deepen your firing knowledge, and return home with a powerful new toolkit for your studio practice, this weekend is for you. Reserve your seat and get ready to explore!
